Cybersecurity roadmap

You detect attacks, find weaknesses before attackers do, and help companies protect themselves. People often start in security monitoring (SOC) or IT support.

A normal day

  • Review alerts of possible attacks
  • Investigate a phishing email
  • Test a website for security flaws

You’ll like it if…

  • You like investigating and spotting what others miss
  • You are detail-oriented and steady
  • You are curious how things break so you can protect them

How to start in Cybersecurity from zero

  1. Months 0–3: the basics

    • Networking and Linux
    • Security fundamentals
    • Python for automation
  2. Months 3–6: your first projects

    • Hands-on labs (TryHackMe)
    • How common attacks work
    • Monitoring tools
  3. Months 6–12: ready to apply

    • An entry-level security certification
    • Writing incident reports
    • Joining a CTF

First jobs

  • Junior SOC Analyst
  • Cybersecurity Analyst

Portfolio projects

  • A home lab with virtual machines
  • Write-ups of 5 TryHackMe rooms
  • A security review of your own website

Tools

  • Linux
  • Wireshark
  • Python
  • SIEM
  • Nmap

How much does Cybersecurity pay?

Median monthly pay in Spanish-speaking Latin America, by experience. The bar runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile of reported pay.

There aren’t enough reported salaries from Latin America for this path yet (we require at least 30 per experience level; there are 5 in total today). We’ll publish it once the data is there.

Official data for Peru

Databases, networks and IT support: median monthly pay S/ 1,790. Half earn between S/ 1,150 and S/ 2,940.

  • Up to age 29: S/ 1,470
  • Age 30 and over: S/ 2,280

National Household Survey (INEI) 2022–2024, 366 people surveyed, weighted to represent the country. It is a broad group: the survey does not separate Cybersecurity from other jobs in the group.

Young (18–29) institute graduates in Ciencias de la Computación: average S/ 1,972 a month, most between S/ 1,000 and S/ 3,400.

Payroll records 2020, graduates 2017-2019. It is old data: treat it as a reference floor.
